Background of the Study
Yoruba proverbs are a cornerstone of cultural expression in Osun State, serving as vehicles for wisdom, social norms, and communal identity. These proverbs are often rich in context-dependent pragmatic markers—linguistic elements that signal meaning based on situational and cultural factors. Such markers may include tone, pauses, and contextual modifiers that influence the interpretation of proverbial expressions (Oluwole, 2023). In traditional Yoruba discourse, pragmatic markers help to adjust the force of a proverb, indicating whether a statement is advisory, cautionary, or celebratory. However, the dynamic nature of language in modern settings has led to evolving interpretations of these markers, which may alter the intended meaning of proverbs. As urbanization and media exposure reshape everyday language use, the contextual cues embedded in proverbs risk being diluted or misinterpreted (Adebayo, 2024). This study examines how pragmatic markers within Yoruba proverbs function in different contexts in Osun State. It aims to document the markers’ traditional roles and assess how modern influences affect their effectiveness in conveying culturally embedded meanings.

Statement of the Problem
Despite their historical significance, Yoruba proverbs in Osun State are experiencing shifts in the use of context-dependent pragmatic markers due to modern communication influences. This change poses a risk to the clarity and cultural richness traditionally conveyed by these proverbs (Oluwole, 2023). The erosion or alteration of these pragmatic markers may lead to misinterpretation, reducing the proverbial impact and the transmission of traditional values. There is a need for systematic investigation into how modern contexts influence the usage and interpretation of pragmatic markers in Yoruba proverbs (Adebayo, 2024). Addressing this gap will help preserve the semantic depth and cultural integrity of these traditional expressions.

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify context-dependent pragmatic markers in Yoruba proverbs.

  • To assess the impact of modern contexts on these markers.

  • To propose strategies for preserving the cultural meaning of proverbs.

Research Questions

  • What pragmatic markers are present in Yoruba proverbs?

  • How do modern contexts affect their interpretation?

  • What measures can help maintain their cultural significance?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed examination of context-dependent pragmatic markers in Yoruba proverbs, crucial for understanding cultural communication in Osun State. The insights will aid linguists, educators, and cultural custodians in preserving the depth of Yoruba oral traditions amid modernization. Findings will inform strategies to retain the richness of traditional proverbs, ensuring that they continue to convey intended meanings and values (Oluwole, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing pragmatic markers in Yoruba proverbs within Osun State and does not encompass other forms of Yoruba discourse.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Markers: Linguistic cues that modify meaning based on context.

  • Yoruba Proverbs: Traditional sayings that convey cultural wisdom.
